The best and easiest way that you can help protect our amazing Dodder Rivers and their natural Wildlife from the hills to the sea is to always keep an eye out for anything unusual and contact us (on Dodder Action Facebook messenger) for backup. In addition to that, you can help us study and record the rich wildlife, the invasive plants, the water quality, air pollution, the litter, the pollinators and the obstacles for fish migration.
Please try our favourite Apps below and watch out for our News updates (on Web and Facebook) for bigger Citizen Science projects and further training too.
Breaking News: Help us monitor Dublin Air Pollution with An Taisce and EPA. Volunteer by 22 Sept for your free test equipment. More detail.
Citizen Scientist Apps
Report Invasive Plants App
To report Himalayan Balsam (a pretty but invasive alien plant that damages native vegetation and erodes river banks), download the "Report Invasive Plants" smartphone App from your Android or iPhone App Store. Link above.
The App dispalys and describes the Himalayan Balsam (currently very easily identifiable from its pink, bell-shaped flowers), as well as the other 3 most common riverside invasive plants. Report them all to help protect our Dodder Wildlife Corridor.
Biodiversity Data Capture App
Help us and the National Biodiversity Centre record and monitor vital information on Ireland's wildlife. The more of the Dodder Wildlife we record (otters, badgers, dippers, kingfishers, bats, red squirrels and others) the more all stakeholders have to pay attention and protect them in any developments.
Open Litter Map App
Help us create the world's most advanced open database on litter types, brands & plastic pollution. If we have a record of which types, sources and brands are the worst offenders, we can encourage them to make a better effort at litter prevention. This worked quite successfully in 2017 - 2019 when we got most coffee shops along the river to reduce disposable coffee cup litter with us.
See it? Say it! App
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed an iPhone and Android app, which makes it easy for you to report a pollution incident the moment you see it. This app also complements the 24 hour nationwide environmental complaints phoneline which is 1850 365 121 (for example, for complaints about fly tipping, water pollution, odours and littering). Let the EPA know today of any problems you see!
River Obstacles App
This app enables people to send in photos and details of obstacles that they see when they’re out and about: either on or in the UK and Ireland's rivers.
BeeBia App
BeeBia is a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and Dublin Bay Biosphere. BeeBia seeks to create a flower map of Ireland, to help conservation of pollinators, namely, bees, hoverflies and butterflies. The flower map will help identify habitats that provide the best food for pollinators. To do this, the help of communities and individuals all across Ireland is needed.
Water Quality Monitoring Projects
We conduct regular projects to monitor water quality including Biological Testing (Kick sampling Mayfly and Stonefly Larvae) and Chemical Testing (like our recent Dodder & Dublin Waterblitz). Follow these in our News updates or get in touch.
